Understanding Homeschooling
Collected By Ge0ph Young on 03-17-2021 at 07:04 AM

My wife and I homeschooled two of our children and learned a few important things in the process, which I’ll outline in this essay.

First of all, homeschooling works best if the child agrees to it and promises to be serious about it. When that happens, you have it made because the child can guide themselves much of the time. Once in a while, you do have to be there to answer questions or point them in a desired direction.

Federal prosecutors have indicted noted cybersecurity eccentric John McAfee for securities and wire fraud for misleading investors at the peak of the last cryptocurrency boom. In late 2017 and early 2018, McAfee urged his hundreds of thousands of Twitter followers to invest in a number of obscure cryptocurrencies. Prosecutors say he failed to disclose his own financial stake in those tokens—and in some cases outright lied about it.

Stories of Old Nevada: Elko
Collected By Ge0ph Young on 03-4-2021 at 07:39 PM

Having worked for NDOT for many years on the Interstate highways across Nevada, I spent many days working in Elko, Nevada. During that time, I met and got to know many of the engineers and crew members who worked there in those days. If any of you in Elko remember me, let me know, as I would love to hear from you.

Elko is known for gold mining in the areas around Carlin where millions in gold have been recovered. Just west of Elko is the California Trail Interpretive Center. This has displays and information about the pioneers who came this way back in the mid 1800s.

Spiders Can Fly Thousands of Miles With Electric Power
Collected By Jeff Young on 03-3-2021 at 08:14 AM

On Halloween in 1832, the naturalist Charles Darwin was onboard the HMS Beagle. He marveled at spiders that had landed on the ship after floating across huge ocean distances. “I caught some of the Aeronaut spiders which must have come at least 60 miles,” he noted in his diary. “How inexplicable is the cause which induces these small insects, as it now appears in both hemispheres, to undertake their aerial excursions.”

Collected By Jeff Young on 02-27-2021 at 07:16 AM

A Texas woman who was charged $9,546 for power this month has filed a class-action lawsuit against Griddy, alleging that the variable-rate electricity provider violated a state law against price gouging during disasters.

Lisa Khoury, a retiree in Mont Belvieu, signed up with Griddy in June 2019 and typically received monthly bills of $200 to $250 until this month's power disaster sent rates soaring. Griddy charged Khoury and her husband $9,546 from February 1 to 19, 2021, the lawsuit said, noting that "some customers received bills as high as $17,000."

Fed glitch shuts down wire transfers, direct deposits, other services
Collected By Jeff Young on 02-25-2021 at 07:31 AM

Federal Reserve electronic systems that enable US banks to send each other electronic payments experienced a massive outage on Wednesday afternoon. A Fed statement attributed the outage to an "operational error" but didn't provide much more detail.

The Federal Reserve System acts as America's central bank, and it controls much of the plumbing of the US financial system.

The automated clearing house (ACH) system is used for paychecks, bill payments, and other small and medium-sized transactions across the economy. The Check 21 system is used for clearing paper checks. It takes one to two days for these transactions to clear.

Making Covid about Climate
Collected By Ge0ph Young on 02-24-2021 at 07:11 AM

The Covid-19 pandemic and the sheer volume of public fear and concurrent compliance has prompted a rethinking of the most promoted “crisis” of our time: “climate change.”

Climate change, which actually began with the global cooling rage of the 1970s, began its new life as “global warming,” then morphed into “climate change” and further evolved into the preferred new phrase, “climate crisis.” Along the rebranding road we also saw the short-lived “climate emergency.”

Chiral Water Super-Structure Forms Around DNA
Collected By Jeff Young on 02-23-2021 at 07:10 AM

Researchers at the University of Notre Dame have observed for the first time a chiral water superstructure templated around a biomolecule. Although many studies have demonstrated the direct interaction of water with highly important macromolecules like DNA, the latest study is a final confirmation that water forms a unique and enduring super-structure around the DNA double helix -- stabilizing the molecular conformation, mediating its functionality and interaction with important information intermediaries like RNA polymerase.
